Dobbins Inn

Dobbins Inn traces its origins to the early 1200s, when the Norman knight Reginald D’Aubin built a fortified tower house beside Carrickfergus Castle. That medieval structure still forms the heart of the building today. Records from 1662 describe Mayor James Dobbin “keeping an Inn and selling ales,” confirming its role as a place of hospitality for more than 360 years.

Careful heritage restoration has preserved original stonework, timber beams and architectural features dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, with dendrochronology confirming elements from around 1530. Together, these remarkable layers of history are why Dobbins Inn is widely regarded as Ulster’s oldest surviving inn and one of Northern Ireland’s most distinctive historic buildings.

Dobbins Inn stands in the heart of historic Carrickfergus, just a short walk from Carrickfergus Castle, whose story has been intertwined with the Inn for more than seven centuries. The marina, town centre, restaurants, museums and scenic coastal walks are all within easy walking distance, making the Inn an ideal base for exploring Carrickfergus and the wider Causeway Coastal Route.

As a historic tower house in the centre of Carrickfergus, Dobbins Inn does not have private on-site parking. However, a large free public car park is located just five minutes’ walk away, and free on-street parking is available on High Street overnight from 5.30pm until 8.30am. Once you’ve arrived, most of Carrickfergus can be explored comfortably on foot.

Check-in is available from 3.00pm, giving us time to prepare your room to the highest standard. If you arrive earlier, we’re happy to store your luggage while you explore Carrickfergus. Check-out is at 11.00am, with late check-out available until 2.00pm (subject to availability) for £30, allowing you to enjoy a more relaxed departure.
